Greece has two of the most important synagogues of Judaism and Thessaloniki is called the "Mother of Israel" because of the many Jews living in the city until World War II. The Jewish presence in Thessaloniki is long and intertwined history from the city. Discover the Jewish monuments, museums and synagogues, and select through the programs we recommend.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Thessaloniki. 
Arrival at Thessaloniki’s airport, assistance and transfer to the hotel. Rest of the day at your leisure. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 2: Sightseeing of Thessaloniki.
Star with the Archaeological Museum. We will see the unique collection of Macedonian Gold and important finds from Archaic, Classical and Roman period. Driving by the international Trade Fairgrounds, the Aristotelis University area, we will reach the Citadel and the city walls where we can admire Thessaloniki’s panoramic view. Continue to visit the Basilica of St’ Demetrios, the saint of the Thessaloniki. Drive along Egnatia Street, named after the famous Roman way, Via Egnatia, walked by St Paul on his way from Costantinopole to Rome. View the Arch of Galerius and St George’s Rotonda.

Day 3: Jewish Tour of the town.

We start our tour from the beautiful Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki. We then walk towards the Freedom Plaza to visit the Holocaust Memorial and one of the city’s two historic synagogues, Monastiriotes' Synagogue or "Yad Lezikaron" Synagogue (Depends from the community, upon request). Thessaloniki’s most popular landmark, the White Tower will be next. We’ll enjoy a small break there and then discover the beautiful eclectic villas of the late 19th century! Our final stop for this wonderful tour will be in the Byzantine Walls area (Kastra).

Day 4: Walk in the city.

A walk in the core of the city that once was the biggest Sephardic Jewish community in Europe! All there is to see in the city that for almost 500 years was known as, "Madre de Israel", Salonica remains irresistibly charming, still in the present day. After a short orientation about the Jewish history of the city, walk with us in the center of Thessaloniki, where Jewish life used to flourish, from the 15th century until World War II.  We will visit the most important buildings, such as the two synagogues of the community, commercial streets, buildings of architectural interest and Jewish past, important bank buildings, the Turkish bath, the central fruit market, and much more. All together forming the administrative, commercial and financial center of the city, which, as you put the pieces together, was mostly operated by the once strong Jewish community of the city. By strolling through the streets of the center, our guests also have the chance to see and admire the most beautiful part of the city of Thessaloniki, the always-charming "madre de Israel".

Day 5-6: Free days.

Enjoy the shopping center, the small restaurants, the beautiful port with plenty of cafes and buy your souvenirs from the town.

Day 7: Departure.

After breakfast, transfer to the airport.
